I have just got a job working with young people.
What should I do if I come into contact with someone else's blood or saliva?
Take the following steps immediately:
n Wash the blood or saliva off your skin with soap and running water.
n If your skin is broken, encourage the wound to bleed and rinse it thoroughly under running water. Do not scrub or suck the wound.
n Wash any blood or saliva out of your eyes with plenty of cold water. If you wear contact lenses, take them out first.
n If you are washing out your mouth, do not swallow the water. Spit it out.
If you think you are at risk of infection, it is also important to get medical advice immediately. Contact your GP, a hospital A&E department, or your employer's occupational health service or medical adviser.
Your healthcare professional may also need to assess the risk of the other person having an infection that could be passed on, such as HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) or hepatitis B or C.
