IT WAS a case of walls come tumbling down in 1951 after fire ripped through the Arnott Simpson store on the corner of Argyle Street and Jamaica Street.

The old outfitters was reduced to a smouldering shell by the overnight blaze and, once the flames had died down, a wrecking crew was brought in to hasten the building's demise. You can see the men, balanced precariously on top of the remaining pillars between the window openings.

The building to the left was the Queen Anne Restaurant, once one of the city's fine dining establishments. A favourite with posh business folk, it boasted three floors of dining rooms and a swish oyster bar. Sadly, the fire put an end to it all that.

Today, the corner is still offering hot food to hungry Glaswegians, only now it's a Pizza Hut outlet.
