'BATTLING' Betty McAllister was a legendary figure in the East End of Glasgow.

She made it her life's work to fight for the rights of her neighbours in the communities of Calton and the Barras, where she ran a fish shop in Bain Street.

A devoted wife and mum, she first got involved with the regeneration of housing in Glasgow's east End during the 1980s. She helped to set up the first residents association in Calton, and always resisted attempts by officialdom to replace the area's building heritage with sub-standard modern boxes. She became famous for cuting politicians down to size and her motto became: "If you shout loud enough, they'll listen".

Betty, who died in 2009, had her work recognised by the Evening Times in 1984, when she was named Scotswoman of the Year.
