ALAN ROSS, 43, from East Kilbride, graduated with Distinction from the MSc Project Management programme:
Alan has been studying this postgraduate course part-time for the past two and a half years, with a combination of self study and class-based learning, delivered to him at his workplace, engineering firm, SPX ClydeUnion Pumps, in Cathcart, Glasgow.
The MSc is currently the only generic project management programme offered in the West of Scotland and has been developed to help meet the needs of industry.
For Alan, a sourcing manager returning to studying as a mature student, balancing work, a young family and academia, was at first, a shock to the system.
He said: "I started an apprenticeship straight out of school and worked my way up to management.
"I've been away from studying for 23 years.
"It's a big gap and the experience at first was quite taxing."
Delivered by people in industry, the course is taught through a combination of approaches, including lectures, tutorials, laboratories, seminars, small group work, role play, case studies and field trips.
Alan, who works 12 hour days, had classes fortnightly and would study every night for an additional four hours, with support from his wife of 20 years, Elma, and sons; Lewis, 19, Clark, 12 and Callum, 11.
Alan now hopes his new qualification will help him to develop at work.
He said: "It's helped me to better understand other people's thinking and operations, so that I can help them achieve their goals."
