IT has played host to the Queen and Nelson Mandela ...

and now members of the public can hire Glasgow City Chambers for their special day.

For the first time in its 124-year history, locals and visitors can tie the knot in one of Scotland's most famous buildings.

Brides and grooms looking for an unusual place to hold their civil ceremony can book the venue for a two-hour wedding service.

Lord Provost Sadie Docherty said: "I can't think of a more beautiful building in Glasgow in which to hold your special day.

"Many famous people have been on the receiving end of Glasgow's civic hospitality in the City Chambers and I'm delighted that citizens and visitors to our city can now also play hosts in the magnificent surroundings."

Built over six years by Glasgow-based architect William Young and opened in 1888 by Queen Victoria, one of the most impressive rooms is the Satinwood Suite, which faces George Square.

The interior is furnished with specially imported Australian satinwood.

Seating up to 100 guests, the front wall is dominated by an alabaster fireplace.

The magnificent Banqueting Hall, its most imposing and historic room, is also available for civil ceremonies.

Catering for up to 300 guests, the ornately arched ceiling in the hall is adorned by paintings by Sir John Lavery, Alexander Roche and George Henry.

Mrs Docherty added: "A big attraction for this venue will be the opportunity to have Europe's largest marble staircase as the backdrop for wedding pictures."

After the ceremony, couples can choose from a range of other city venues for their reception, including The Burrell Collection, The Winter Gardens at The People's Palace, the Tall Ship, St Mungo's Museum of Religious Life and the Pavilion at Queen's Park.

The City Chambers has been the heart of Glasgow's civic government for Scotland's largest local authority for the past 16 years.

Heads of state who have been entertained there include Queen Elizabeth II, Nelson Mandela and former French President Francois Mitterrand.

The City Chambers have also served as a location for a number of films including House of Mirth, The 39 Steps and Heavenly Pursuits.
