A BOMB disposal team was called when road workers building a car park in Glasgow's Gallowgate stumbled across an unidentified canister.
The workers called Scottish Fire and Rescue at around noon and officers from Calton Community Fire Station attended.
On arrival, they cordoned off the area and gas companies and the Royal Navy Ordnance Team's Bomb Disposal Unit were called in to investigate.
Experts climbed into a deep hole that had been dug by the workers to take a closer look at the cylinder as police officers kept the public and vehicles away from the scene.
Gallowgate was shut by police eastbound between High Street and Moir Street, before the gas cylinder was found to be empty and not under any pressure.
The incident was over by around 4pm yesterday.
A spokesman from Scottish Fire and Rescue said: "It was established that the canister was an old cylinder that had been buried for a number of years.
"It was empty and not pressurised and so completely safe."
