Dr Andrew Murray gets behind student sports challenge

Endurance runner Doctor Andrew Murray, who has pounded the tracks of some of the world's most gruelling races, yesterday showed support for those from Glasgow, Strathclyde and Caledonian universities preparing to compete in Glasgow Taxis Cup.

Dr Murray, who last year completed seven ultra marathons in seven days on seven continents, has also worked to promote the importance of physical activity for the Scottish Government.

The super-fit doctor last year ran from Scotland to the Sahara Desert, completing 2659 miles in 78 days, as well as finishing first place in the North Pole Marathon.

He looked back at his amazing achievements during an appearance at the Emirates Arena to endorse the Glasgow Taxis Cup. Now in its ninth year, the city event is a day-long sporting contest which sees students from the city's three universities compete in 15 different categories.

It will be held in the Emirates Arena on March 13 when eyes will be on the University of Glasgow who took first place last year following a nail-biting finish which came down to the final basketball game.

Dr Murray said: "The Glasgow Taxis Cup is a great event and I wish the best of luck to everyone taking part.

"Regardless of who finishes in first place on the day, it's fantastic to see so many students involved in sport and being given the chance to compete against their peers across the city."

Stephen Flynn, vice-chairman of Glasgow Taxis Ltd, said: "It's great to have such a positive ambassador involved with the competition, who is truly an inspiration to people all over the world.

"Some of the challenges he has overcome during his career are beyond impressive and we're really grateful for his support."

Dr Murray runs up to 180 miles a week in the lead up to events, equivalent to running from Glasgow to Inverness.

He is preparing for seven ultra-distance events this year, including a Himalayan 100 mile challenge and Everest Mountain Endurance event.
