LIVING and working together could be a recipe for disaster...

but these two young chefs are cooking up success.

Zoe and Andrew Greenan are the young power duo behind the new Glasgow restaurant owned by celebrity chef Martin Wishart.

The couple met while working at upmarket Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens and are now running The Honours on West George Street.

Both worked with executive chef Paul Tamburrini at Hotel du Vin.

Paul was lured east by Martin Wishart to work in the first The Honours, in Edinburgh, in 2011 and he took Andrew and Zoe with him.

Now a second restaurant has opened in Glasgow with Andrew taking over as head chef and Zoe as sous chef.

Zoe said: "I was excited to be involved in opening the new restaurant when there was so much going on.

"Paul and Martin are two very different chefs but they are similar in expecting very high standards. They have the same sort of thinking in their work: of being professional and doing your absolute best whether it's breakfast or room service or a sitting in the restaurant.

"Everything has got to be the best it can be.

"Obviously we've learned a lot of technical skills as well as learning about attention to detail and a level of focus that allows us to make food that is very, very good."

Zoe, who is originally from Forth, South Lanarkshire, began working for a local hotel when she was 14.

She added: "I loved the social environment and the relationships you build up with your co-workers, which I think you make more so than if you were sitting in a bank all day or in an office."

After working in several small, local hotels, Zoe saw an advert for a position in One Devonshire Gardens and, in 2006, joined the team there.

Andrew, who was born in Bournemouth but moved to Scotland at 17, was a modern apprentice and worked in what is now the Hilton Garden Inn, near the SECC.

He later also joined One Devonshire Gardens the same year.

So they started at One Devonshire Gardens at the same time? "One week apart," says Zoe before Andrew cuts in. "Two weeks apart," he says, while Zoe laughs. "He won't let me forget that extra week."

It was another year before the couple fell in love - and they take it in turns to tell the story.

Zoe said: "Paul seems to think he match made us but he didn't."

"We worked together for about a year before we went out for the day," Andrew added.

Zoe then said: "And then Andrew moved into my flat. I lived right next door to Hotel du Vin so I think he was just looking for a way to cut down his commute."

"She was literally the girl next door. And it was very handy for getting to work," Andrew said.

The couple married in June 2013 in St Aloysius Church in Garnethill.

Andrew, who is in charge of a team of 12, says he is given the chance to have a hand in the menu for what is Glasgow's newest high-end restaurant.

He said: "Martin and Paul have the last say in the menu but I am very keen to put my own mark on it and they are happy to listen to my ideas or set me challenges.

"That's one of the great things about working with them. They have so much experience and we can pick their brains and benefit from all that experience, they can advise us."

As well as the formal sittings in the restaurant, the catering team is in charge of room service - meaning they are always busy.

At home Andrew cooks and the couple insist they don't live off takeaways when not at work.

Getting the same day off together is a rare occurrence but when it does happen they're enjoying exploring Glasgow's restaurant scene.

The couple has been living away for four years but have moved to Finnieston to make the commute easier.

Having been in Edinburgh for so long, they have been amazed at the change in the Glasgow restaurant scene - particularly in the up-and-coming Finnieston area.

Zoe said: "We have our old favourites that we're loyal too. As soon as we moved back the first thing we did was go to our Chinese in Anniesland. We'd never go anywhere else.

"But it's been really interesting to see the change in Finnieston. There's so many great restaurants there now, you're spoiled for choice as there's all different styles of food up there.

"The area has really upped its game - even the takeaways seem better and smarter. We're really enjoying living there.

Andrew is in charge of the restaurant but Zoe's focus, as pastry chef, is the desserts.

Zoe said: "We don't struggle to work together and live together because we've never known anything different. I think it will actually be really hard if we ever stop doing it one day.

"Andrew and I have different focuses but we meet together over the running of the restaurant so we're not in each other's pockets all day."

And what does the future hold for the young couple - could there be a Greenan's restaurant one day?

Zoe added: "At the moment we have a really great team around us and we love working for Paul and Martin. We're really happy.

"For the next chunk of time we're keen to stay where we are - but you never know what might happen when we're in our 40s."
