THE colour and spectacle of the Mela will tomorrow light up the community of Barmulloch.

The first Mela on Your Doorstep is being held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the annual event.

It will feature performances, come and try sessions and some local community groups will receive funding to continue rehearsing with the aim of appearing in the Glasgow Mela on June 14.

The event at Barmulloch community centre is free and visitors will be able to try Bhangra and Bollywood dance sessions, international cookery, arts activities and storytelling from around the world.

The Mela on Your Doorstep starts at noon on Sunday and will run until 5pm with sessions and performances in the main hall and library with cookery sessions in the cafe.

A second Mela on Your Doorstep will be held at Tramway and the Hidden Gardens on Saturday May 16 before the Glasgow Mela is held in Kelvingrove Park on Sunday June 14 between noon and 8pm.

Councillor Soryia Siddique, chairwoman of the Mela steering group, said: "The Glasgow Mela has its 25th anniversary this year and taking this celebration of Glasgow's multicultural and diverse communities to more parts of the city is a wonderful way of marking this important milestone.

"The Mela on Your Doorstep at Barmulloch community centre will create new links to the festival in these communities and give more people than ever before the opportunity to be part of Scotland's biggest free multicultural festival.

"It will be a great chance to mark this anniversary and use art and culture to express Glasgow's friendliness."

Glasgow's first Mela was held in 1990 as part of European City of Culture and was an indoor celebration at the then newly opened Tramway.
