The former news editor in Scotland of the News Of The World, who gave evidence at the Tommy Sheridan perjury trial, has been charged with the crime.

Douglas Wight, 39, was also charged by Strathclyde Police with conspiracy to hack phones and multiple breaches of the Data Protection in which he allegedly obtained "personal data of the public".

The news comes three months after the Prime Minister's former spin doctor Andy Coulson was also charged with perjury.

Mr Wight testified with Mr Coulson, the paper's former editor, during Sheridan's trial in 2010 for lying in his defamation case.
