POLICE today stepped up their hunt for a hit-and-run driver after a young dad died when he was struck by a pick-up truck.

Dad of three Frank Baxter, 23, died as a result of being hit by the vehicle in Newmains, in North Lanarkshire, shortly before 11pm on Tuesday.

The vehicle, which it is thought pinned him to a wall, was later found torched.

Frank was taken to Wishaw General Hospital but medics could not save him.

Reports today said Mr Baxter came from a travelling family.

His wife Williamena and their children are being comforted by relatives

His 31-year-old friend, who was also hit by the vehicle, suffered leg injuries and is in a stable condition in Monklands General Hospital, Airdrie.

It is understood police are following a positive line of inquiry.

As reported in later editions of last night's Evening Times, police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the incident in the town's Crindledyke Crescent.

The pick-up hit a property as it was driven at speed from the scene to Bonkle Road, Wishaw.

The male driver then abandoned the pickup and either made off on foot or was picked up by another vehicle, say police.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact police.
