AN apprenticeship programme in North Lanarkshire has taken on 20 new trainees.

Repairs and maintenance service provider Morrison Scotland LLP received more than 150 applications from people aged 16 to 19.

The apprentices will work on Morrison Scotland's housing and public buildings repairs and maintenance contracts with North Lanarkshire Council, which has more than 37,000 properties.

The apprentices include three electricians, five joiners, two plumbers, a lift engineer and a mechanical pump engineer, as well as eight business administration apprentices.

Willie Docherty, managing director of Morrison Scotland, said: "This programme provides a good deal for everyone. It enables Morrison Scotland to recruit talented young people while giving them valuable skills and the opportunity to learn from our experienced workforce."
