A SHOPKEEPER is in a critical condition in hospital after being stabbed in his store.

Police investigating the attempted murder are appealing for witnesses.

The 48-year-old was working in Sunshine Licensed Grocer and Newsagent in Green Road, Paisley, when he was attacked at about 5pm on Friday. He was rushed to the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

The motive for the attack is not known.

A forensic investigation was carried out at the scene and officers were today carrying out door-to-door inquiries and examining CCTV film in an effort to find clues to the attacker.

Detective Chief Inspector Duncan Sloan, who is leading the investigation, said: "Sunshine Grocers is a popular shop, so it is possible someone may have seen or heard the assault taking place.

"I am keen to speak to a female seen walking from the cycle track on Fulbar Road towards Green Road about the time of the attack.

"She is in her late teens with dark hair, and was wearing an apron and carrying Aldi carrier bags.

"She may have seen something that could be relevant to our inquiry."
