I AM a Hillhead Primary School parent and I am not furious about the decision to redraw the catchment areas.

Like many parents at the school, I am relieved that our community has not lost an acutely needed and excellent early years centre. Dispersing the nursery was a terrible plan, not only because research has shown the incredible benefits of high quality early years provision for children, but also because it would have been to the detriment of the school in the long term.

The best way to make the school less crowded is to reduce the intake. Making the school larger would have made it vulnerable to even more overcrowding in the future. Current legislation for general purpose rooms and placement requests means that any room that can be used as a classroom is not protected, that is why the library, art room etc are currently classrooms. The proposal to make more general purpose space by converting the car park is a sensible one because it can't be turned into a classroom in the future.

REGARDS day care for some older ethnic minority groups to close, personally, I think taxpayers' money should not be spent on any facilities that encourage segregation.

Whether it's care homes, housing or other services for particular religions or races; whether it's schools for certain religions or schools for those whose parents can afford fees.

If anyone of any race or religion -or the wealthier - only want to be with their own then that's their choice, but all the rest of us should not be funding it.

Public money should be for facilities for all the public, not exclusive groups.

ON the bed bug issue, First Minister, finally being forced to 'look into it' does not cut the mustard. It is your constituency and has entered the Third World (at best) on your watch. Glasgow and the West are deliberately underfunded as they are not SNP fiefdoms. Embra's corrupt tram project is far more important to you than the misery of living in a stinking slum.

As First Minister you are supposed to care for all Scots not just SNP supporters. You could try living in a Govanhill flat for a week and look and scratch around you.

GREAT news that the street pastors are extending their patch and straying into the West End. Covering the likes of Byres Road and Dumbarton Road area on Friday nights, they will certainly have their work cut out. We are lucky that we have volunteers in our city who are prepared to help others when they can be the most vulnerable. I wish them well on their venture.
