WORK to begin building hundreds of new homes in Laurieston is one of the most welcome sights in the city.
This area has been waiting for a slice of the regeneration cake for longer than it should have, with thousands having to put up with sub-standard housing for years.
Eventually people voted with their tenancies when alternatives became available and, left with difficult to let homes, the old tower blocks had to be reduced to a pile of rubble.
The homes on the site will be far better than those they replace and should breathe new life into a historic part of the city.
The demolition and new-build strategy is in full swing across Glasgow as the promise of better homes following the stock transfer to GHA and second stage transfers to smaller associations becomes a reality.
Glasgow still needs more affordable social housing as latest new build housing shows with private developers almost slowing building to a standstill, it is dependent on the social sector to keep building going.
This needs co-operation between housing associations, council and government to ensure the funds area available to build the homes.
As Laurieston shows the city is changing for the better, but there is a long way to go to ensure every home is fit for our citizens.
