VETERAN manager Alex Morrison believes Ricky Burns can become Scotland's first three-weight world champion within months.

The 31-year-old fighter will make his light welterweight debut in a 10-round contest in Leeds on October 4.

His opponent has yet to be announced but Morrison believes it can be a step towards Burns writing his name in the sport's record books.

He said: "If all goes well with the next couple of fights, Ricky could challenge again for the world title early next year. I'd love to see him make history as our first three-weight champion.

"Moving up a weight is the right decision for Ricky. He was killing himself making the lightweight limit."

Burns relocated to London with new trainer Tony Sims for his last fight, a loss to Dejan Zlaticanin, but Morrison believes it was too early to tell if the switch from Billy Nelson had worked.

"If there were changes made I didn't see them," he said. "Weight was an issue. Zlaticanin was the opponent from hell because he's so small."

Morrison is sure that fighting in England will be the perfect remedy for Burns after two losses.

He said: "The pressure is off Ricky. No tickets to sell, no home crowd. It's a great chance for him to get back on his feet."

But the manager ruled out suggestions Burns should fight for a British title. He joked: "Ricky comes from Coatbridge. I think he'd rather box for the Irish title.

"He never went down the British route when he was younger and I don't think he will now."

Morrison will have two other fighters on the Leeds bill, Edinburgh cruiserweight Stephen Simmons and super middleweight David Brophy, of Caldercruix. Both are undefeated.
