One-time Queen's Park striker Craig Smith's 22nd goal of the season secured promotion for Blantyre Vics last night through a 1-0 victory over East Kilbride Thistle.

Their narrow triumph also saw the Vics take over pole position in the Central Second Division, however this was hardly a championship-winning display from David Greig's men at the Show Park.

Smith said: "We certainly made heavy weather of getting over the hurdle but in fairness, the state of the pitch made it virtually impossible to get the ball down and make passes."

His goal in 21 minutes came from a route-one approach after a searching ball into the box was touched into his path by strike partner Davie Kirkwood allowing him to deftly tuck a low shot past Jags keeper Markos Koukos for a 1-0 lead.

There were shocks galore in the Super First Division where a Chris Zok brace helped Cumbernauld United chalk up a 2-0 triumph over title-hopefuls Beith at the same time as third-placed Shotts Bon Accord were succumbing to a 3-1 defeat away to Kilsyth Rangers.

Central First Division title challengers Bellshill Athletic slipped up in losing 2-0 at Maryhill but there was better news for Neilston, 1-0 victors against St Anthony's and for Benburb for whom Gary McKenna was on the mark in their 1-0 defeat of Shettleston.

A similar scoreline ensued at Somervell Park where Ryan Kelly's first-half score helped Cambuslang Rangers get the better of Johnstone Burgh with both sides finishing with eight men.
