Jamie Murphy says missing out on the chance to take on Romanian cracks Rapid Bucharest was a blow for Motherwell ahead of their European journey.
The friendly was called off after a 2.30pm inspection at Grangemouth Stadium.
With Well set to go into the Champions League third round qualification draw on July 20, Murphy believes the Steelmen missed an opportunity to measure how far off the European pace they are.
Murphy said: "All of the lads were particularly looking forward to the game. It is just a real pity we have missed out on the opportunity to test ourselves and get a good gauge of where we are.
"The draw for the Champions League qualifiers is on Friday week so, to have banked a game against European opposition of the quality of Bucharest would have been invaluable.
"It's just frustrating that, in the second week in July, a game has been called off due to weather."
However, Murphy was upbeat about the value of Well's Algarve training camp. He said: "I think all of the players really felt the benefit of the week in Portugal. To have had three sessions a day in training was tremendous.
"The weather had not been good before we left and, having come back to more rain, it underlined how important the stint over in the Algarve was."
