JAMIE BAKER has vowed to have a real go when he meets world No.5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at Queen's Club today in the Aegon Championships.
The Glaswegian defeated fellow Brit Oliver Golding 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 in his first round match yesterday to book his place against the French Open quarter-finalist who only last week held four match points against world No.1 Novak Djokovic.
But Baker, whose ranking will climb inside the top 200 for the first time thanks to his defeat of Golding, says he plans to go for it against the big hitting No.2 seed.
Baker said: "I have nothing to lose against Jo-Wilfried and I am relishing the prospect of playing him.
"We played four years back in a Challenger and he had a huge game then, but when you look at what he has achieved in tennis since then it will obviously be a massive challenge for me.
"But I have nothing to lose and grass is the surface that is the greatest leveller in tennis. This is his first match on grass this season and he has just come over to the UK after his run at the French.
"So it is vital that I ask as many questions of him as I can early on. But to be honest these are the games against top 10 players that you put all the hard work in for."
Baker was particularly pleased with his victory over US Open junior champion Golding which will have done his hopes of returning to the Great Britain Davis Cup team no harm. He said: "The key for me was when he had two break points on my serve at 4-4, but I hung in there and came through in the tie break.
"I was pretty solid on the serve and my return was good as well but now I have to lift my game more than one level against Tsonga.
"Golding was a must-win match for me and now Tsonga will be about enjoying the moment."
Defending champion Andy Murray will open against another Frenchman, Nicolas Mahut.
