SCOTS-BORN jockey Campbell Gillies, who landed the biggest win of his career on Brindisi Breeze in the Albert Bartlett Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival this year, has died while on holiday.
The jump rider, just 21, rode more than 50 winners for Perthsiire trainer Lucinda Russell, including Brindisi Breeze.
Gillies was in action at Hexham at the weekend before going on holiday to Kavos, in Greece, yesterday when tragedy struck.
Winner of 131 races under rules in Great Britain, Gillies enjoyed his best campaign in 2011-12 with 38 winners, and had four successes so far this season.
Fellow jockey Zander Voy said: "You have one best friend and now he's gone."
