Ewan McGregor named Camusdarach beach near Arisaig as his favourite place in the world

YOU'D imagine that someone as successful and well-travelled as Star Wars actor Ewan McGregor would pick a truly exotic location as his favourite place on earth.

This, after all, is the man who, in addition to venturing to a galaxy far, far away, has criss-crossed the known world on a motorbike in the company of his friend, Charley Boorman.

He has also filmed some of his 40-odd movies in any number of scintillating locations, from Morocco to Sydney and California.

But it seems that nowhere he has ever been can compare with Camusdarach beach near Arisaig, in his native Scotland.

The beach, which is famous for its remarkable sunsets, impressed millions of movie-goers with its guest-role in Bill Forsyth's Local Hero, which starred Ewan's uncle, actor Denis Lawson, as well as Burt Lancaster and Fulton Mackay.

Although most of the film was shot in the fishing village of Penan in Aberdeenshire, the crew headed to the white sands of Arisaig to film the beach scenes.

The film led to the beach becoming known as Ben's Beach, after the beachcomber character played by Fulton.

Asked by Travel magazine to name his favourite place, Ewan replied: "It has to be Camusdarach beach, near Arisaig in the Highlands. We used to camp there when I was a kid."

Many people have their own favourite places - there's even a specialist website, favoriteplaceonearth.com, dedicated to just such a topic.

Many people would select Scotland, among them Scots musician Colin MacIntyre - also known as Mull Historical Society - who chose Iona and the walk up to Duart Castle on Mull.

For Paul McCartney's late wife, Linda, it was the Mull of Kintyre.

Where is your favourite place in Scotland? Is it somewhere on the wild coast, in the mountainous Highlands, the Borders or a quiet east-coast fishing village?

Or is it somewhere in Glasgow, such as the Burrell, the Botanic Gardens or Buchanan Street?

Where is your favourite spot in Scotland, and why do you love it?
