Caddis lands two-year deal

by Ronnie Cully

Gordon Strachan has handed young full-back Paul Caddis a new two-year deal at Parkhead.

Caddis, 20, broke into the Celtic first team last season and won rave reviews from supporters for his impressive displays.

And, despite the presence of Lee Naylor, Andreas Hinkel and Mark Wilson, he has been handed another contract.

Caddis made two substitute appearances in the pre-season friendlies against Southampton and Fulham over the weekend.

And, speaking from the club's warm-weather training base in Portugal today, he showed the level of his ambition when saying the 3-1 defeat at Craven Cottage was not acceptable.

Caddis said: "Fulham were a good side. "They struggled to stay up last season so they just showed us the quality of the Barclays Premier League.

"The most important thing in these pre-season games is to get our match fitness up as we prepare to launch our defence of the SPL title in a few weeks.

"But you ask any player at Celtic and they will tell you the same thing. They want to win. So does the boss. We set out to win every game that we play in.

"Losing like we did to Fulham wasn't good enough and we have to improve the standard of our play in the matches we have coming up before the season kicks off next month."

Celtic have settled into their training camp just outside Villamoura, taking up accommodation vacated by Real Madrid at the weekend.

And manager Gordon Strachan has quickly got his squad working in the 80 degree conditions.

Whether or not Gabriel Tamas joins them in Portugal this week could largely depend on the outcome of talks in France today between the central defender's agents and his club, Auxerre.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell has pitched what he considers to be a realistic offer to Tamas based on their valuation of his worth and are unlikely to increase it significantly.

With Wolves the latest club to be linked with an interest in Bobo Balde, some flexibility on the wage front may occur.

And the Guinean defender - who is available on a free - will be given another chance to impress when Celtic face Middlesbrough in their opening match of the Faro Tournament tomorrow night.

But there will be no room for Argentinian striker, Fernando Cavenaghi. Celtic are reported to have considered the man who joined Bordeaux last year for £6m.

But the champions have since concluded the deal to take Georgios Samaras permanently.

The French club have made it clear there has been no contact from Celtic, nor is there any point in trying to lure Cavenaghi, who has three years left on his contract.

President Jean Louis Triaud said: "No price would convince us to sell Fernando. He is one of our best players and we do not need to sell him. If Celtic plan to call me I'd tell them not to bother."
