FRESH calls were made today for Glasgow's Kalashnikov councillor' to be expelled from the SNP.

Opposition MSPs united in protest to say the Nationalists should kick Jahangir Hanif out of the party after he quit several city council posts.

Although continuing as councillor for the Southside Central ward, the Evening Times revealed yesterday Mr Hanif has resigned as a Bailie a post which let him represent Lord Provost Bob Winter at formal events in his absence.

Mr Hanif, who was caught on camera firing a Kalashnikov AK-47 rifle, has also resigned from the executive and planning committees.

Labour and Tory politicians insist the two-month suspension handed down last week by SNP bosses isn't tough enough.

Shettleston Labour MSP Frank McAveety said: "I hope he is not being protected because he is a close political friend of Nicola Sturgeon.

"If he thinks resigning from a minor committee is a sufficient response he's mistaken.

"The public would expect him to either resign from the SNP or for the party to expel him."

Labour leadership contender Andy Kerr added: "Resigning from a committee is not sufficient. By doing so he acknowledges that his actions are unacceptable.

"It is now up to the SNP to face up to its responsibilities and deal with this matter appropriately."

Glasgow Tory MSP Bill Aitken said Mr Hanif was at last recognising the "inappropriateness and seriousness" of his actions.

"But the obvious question is why isn't the SNP following suit? He should not be holding public office and the SNP should have expelled him.

"Their failure to do so when, at the same time as they are rightly campaigning against violence and the use of firearms, is an appalling piece of hypocrisy."

The row blew up after the Evening Times published pictures of him firing the rifle during a trip to Pakistan in 2005 with five of his children.

Meanwhile, the row took a fresh twist today after councillor Hanif's 17-year-old daughter Noor reportedly wrote to Alex Salmond calling on him to be thrown out of the party.

She is claimed to have said: "I don't think that you have taken this matter seriously enough I cannot believe he has been let off.

"My siblings and I were put in an environment where people were pointing loaded AK-47 guns at each other.

"He should be expelled he should be fired to make an example, so other people think twice about playing with guns and putting children in harm's way."

The Evening Times exclusively revealed how Noor, then 14, was taken in a blacked- out van with her siblings to a training camp near the Afghan border and shown how to fire the rifle.

The councillor is seen on video showing his children - one as young as five - how to fire the weapon.

Councillor Hanif said today: "I am saddened by the fact that my children are being manipulated and dragged into this situation."
