ORGANISERS of the Glasgow Music Festival today declared the two-week event a massive success with more than 7000 performers taking part.

The two-week festival came to an end at the weekend and attracted more than 1200 entries from soloists, choirs and musicians, dancers and others.

Laura McEwan, the festival's fundraising secretary, said: "It has been a very successful festival and this year we have had 1212 entries and 7000 performers.

"In addition to Glasgow performers, we've had people from the Cowal Peninsula, Campbeltown and Edinburgh.

"We see the festival as a platform for performers."

Now in its 96th year, Glasgow Music Festival started in 1911 and has been growing in numbers every year. It will celebrate its centenary year in 2011 when an extra special fortnight of music is promised.

The end of the two-week extravaganza of music, dance and poetry was marked on Saturday night with performances from the winners at Renfield St Stephen's Church in Bath Street.

Organisers also held events at Woodside Halls where performers were left on tenterhooks as the results were announced.

Festival chairman Robert MacDonald said: "We get a great response from schools.

"It can be very exciting and you can almost feel the tension as the adjudicators announce the results." FINAL RESULTS
