ONE of the biggest sweetie shops in Britain is to open in Glasgow.

The former Zavvi store, by the St Enoch Centre - which is a massive 7000sq ft, is to be turned over to gobstoppers, cola cubes and pink shrimps.

Candy'N'Shake opens tomorrow in a flurry of excitement.

The business, owned by local entrepreneur Bradley Mitchell, will be opened by X-Factor finalists The Dolly Rockers - with Bradley hoping the launch will help make the retro-sweet market sexy.

The new outlet, which is split level, is to open in two stages, and will be a sister outlet for Candy and Shake which will remain open in Buchanan Street.

On Saturday, the ground floor level, which is 4000sq ft, will open, with the 3000sq ft basement area - originally expected to be used from later in the year - now possibly opening as early as the next few weeks.

Initially the shop will create six jobs, with up to 20 more staff required when the second level comes into use.

Bradley said: "We're opening in a prime site in one of UK retail's busiest streets and, with its redevelopment programme making good progress, this is the perfect time to be joining the centre.

"Candy'N'Shake is a really fun store for all the family to visit and we have more than 400 different varieties of sweets on offer."

In January the self- proclaimed biggest sweet shop in Scotland, Mr Sweet, opened at the Forge Market, selling more than 500 different sweets.

The shops say business is booming due to people treating themselves to small gifts during the credit crunch rather than spending on big indulgences.

It's a shot in the arm for local suppliers too -Candy'N' Shake has sourced some locally made products, including Equi's Ice Cream, which is made in Hamilton.

Susan Nicol, general manager of St Enoch Centre, said: "We're delighted to welcome Candy 'N' Shake to the development.

"The new store occupies a very high-profile location on Argyle Street and I'm confident it will prove to be a big success with Glasgow shoppers."
