Gavin Roger went from underdog to top dog in the second round of the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish Boys' Championship at Murcar Links.

The Clober ace dumped last season's Scottish junior No.1 Greig Marchbank of Dumfries by 5 and 4.

Roger has a proven pedigree in matchplay competition having won the West of Scotland Championship in 2011.

And the Milngavie kid, 18, showed his fondess for the format as he eased past Marchbank, a quarter-finalist last year.

Roger, who took charge of the match by winning the first three holes, said: "I knew Greig would probably have been favourite but matchplay golf is what I prefer and I know that on my day I can beat anyone."

Sandyhills teen Craig Anderson beat Kirkhill's Fraser Kane 5 and 4 – then admitted how he hopes to pay the ultimate tribute to his former coach, Adam Hunter.

Hunter, who coached tournament sponsor Lawrie to Open success back in 1999, was the Sandyhills club's most famous son but tragically lost his battle with leukaemia last year.

And Anderson, the Glasgow Boys' Matchplay champ, said: "Adam was my coach for three years and we became very close in that time. So it would be nice to have a decent run this week for him."

Ralston junior champion Blair Dalgleish, who broke his wrist three days before last year's event, defeated 2011 semi-finalist Calum Hill of North Berwick by 4 and 3.

And Balmore's Paul Delaney, who found out he was in the field four hours before teeing off, beat Cameron Campbell of St Andrews by one hole, while Bearsden's Cameron Kirkwood crushed Jackson Bell 8 and 7 in round one.
