A FURIOUS Glasgow office worker has hit out at "dangerous" parking regulations which saw him fined for entering a city bus lane to get to a legitimate parking space.

Commuter Gordon Day, 46, was hit with a £60 fine for entering a 24-hour bus lane in West George Street.

He says he drove down a 15-metre stretch of the lane because it was the only way to get into the space.

The council said he should have entered the space by pulling up alongside it in the busy main lane of the road — two lanes out —and then crossing the bus lane, a manoeuvre which Mr Day from Cumbernauld says is dangerous and difficult.

He said: "It's not possible to access these parking spaces without crossing the bus lane unless you're driving Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

"So you see the parking space, park your motor in it and get a £60 fine for crossing the bus lane."

Mr Day appealed the fine, but that only made the situation worse.

He added: "The council rejected my appeal, despite upholding a similar appeal from another driver who works in the same building.

"They seem to be suggesting that I should have entered the parking space from the car lane, two lanes away, and not have driven down the bus lane before reaching the spaces.

"I estimate the distance between where I triggered the camera and where I parked to be 10 to 15 metres.

"I would certainly consider such a manoeuvre quite dangerous, especially in a busy city centre, not to mention very difficult.

"Had I driven down the bus lane for half a mile then they would have a reasonable point but 10 to 15 metres?

"The only reason I was in the bus lane at all was to access the parking space and it seems a highly ambiguous situation. It seems to be an issue of how soon the bus lane is entered to get to the parking space but I was in it for one reason and feel very unjustly treated."

In response to Mr Day's appeal, a letter from Glasgow City Council stated: "While I note your comments, in this instance the vehicle should have approached the parking area by means of the lane to the left of the bus lane rather than driving down the bus lane."

And a spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: "Crossing the bus lane to access parking is allowed – and a motorist would not be issued with a penalty for doing so.

"That is not, however, what the evidence shows in this case. The camera clearly shows the vehicle being driven down the bus lane well before parking, which is and always has been an offence."
