ONE woman was injured during a pile-up on a motorway during the morning rush hour.

The 12-car accident happened on the northbound carriageway of the M77 between junctions one and two at Barrhead Road and Dumbreck, causing major tailbacks for several miles. Emergency services were called shortly before 7am today.

Among the 12 vehicles involved were two vans. Police said one woman suffered slight injuries and was treated at the scene.

Ambulance crews were alerted, but were later stood down.

One motorist who was caught up in the crash said it took her an hour to reach the city centre.

She said: "I made the mistake of joining the motorway from Darnley, and when I got on cars were bumper to bumper. It is a busy road at the best of times, but it must have taken me an hour to get to work instead of about 30 minutes. I pity anyone who was stuck in it further back."

Vehicles were later moved to the hard shoulder, but motorists were being advised to seek alternative routes if possible.

All lanes re-opened within about 20 minutes of the accident, but the delays had caused severe congestion of about three miles back, to junction five, Maidenhill.

A police spokeswoman said: "Police were today called to the scene of a road accident between junction one and two of the M77.

"Twelve vehicles were involved and they were removed to the hard shoulder. One woman suffered minor injuries, but did not require hospital treatment."
