IF YOU love being on the ice, it's almost time to get your skates in Glasgow's George Square.

The transformation of the centre of the Square into a winter wonderland is nearly finished and it will open at noon tomorrow.

Last year more than 50,000 people skated round the 736sq m rink, which is filled with 210,000 litres of water to form 6in of ice.

It takes 90 hours to freeze hard enough for people to skate on.

At the heart of Glasgow Loves Christmas, Glasgow on Ice will be open every day until January 6, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day - an extra four days than in previous years.

This year Student Magic Mondays will offer half price skating to those studying, and the Penguin Sessions, for toddlers to seven-year-olds, are back.

Events for Glasgow Loves Christmas also kick off tomorrow, with fashion shows at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm, and entertainment from 40s and 50s group The Kennedy Cupcakes and funk band FNUK.

Sunday will see the first of six family fun days in George Square, where Santa will tell festive tales.

Councillor Gordon Matheson said: "Glasgow is ready to welcome every-one to share in festive fun."
