A SERIES of events are planned for Glasgow libraries to celebrate Book Week Scotland this month.

The programme starts with a "spot the reader" event today which continues for the next seven days.

Anyone spotted reading at locations across the city will get a Book Week Scotland goodie bag.

Shettleston, Langside and Partick libraries are hosting special book clubs called "a book, a brew and a banter."

The Mitchell Library is staging an oral history of the bagpipes on Thursday.

This Saturday it will hold its first pop-up festival which features Bounce and Rhyme, the Play Talk Read Bus, a young writers' conference, the Book Week Scotland debate and a Literary Death Match.

That involves four authors, including Christopher Brookmyre, reading for seven minutes or less in the hope of being judged winner.

Archie Graham, chairman of Glasgow Life, said: "There really is something for everyone at Book Week Scotland at Glasgow libraries with many of the events free.

"From some of Scotland's literary giants to advice for budding authors to children's events and the pop-up festival at the Mitchell and even a clinic to help people find the best reads for them.

"Book Week Scotland promises to be a memorable week of events for book fans across Glasgow."

The event runs from today until December 2 and is a celebration of books and reading for everyone.

People across Scotland are being encouraged to take part in the first week-long national celebration of books and to get involved in events.
