THREE days of free events have been arranged in the heart of Glasgow to mark St Andrew's Day.

George Square will host groups Clanadonia and Bags of Rock for an evening concert on the big day, this Friday.

On Saturday, the square will come alive as story tellers, face painters, the Williamwood Pipe Band, Highland dancers, the John Carmichael Ceilidh Band and Trail West entertain the crowds during the afternoon and late into the evening.

On Sunday, there will be more story telling, a kilted caricaturist and the Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra and Cherrygrove providing another full day to enjoy.

City council leader Gordon Matheson said: "No-one knows how to celebrate like Glasgow and a whole weekend of St Andrew's Day events will allow all the family to take part.

"We have something for everyone available in the heart of the city, from the very traditional through to more modern approaches to Scottish culture.

"Whenever you head for George Square, there will be something for everyone to enjoy."

Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop said: "Glasgow Loves St Andrew's Day is a fantastic celebration of Scottish music, culture and dance and a fitting way to mark Scotland's national day.

"As part of the Scottish Winter Festivals, St Andrew's Day kicks off the celebrations in true style with events happening up and down the country."

Glasgow Loves St Andrew's Day, which is expected to attract thousands of people to George Square to celebrate Scotland's patron saint during the three days of events, is also a key part of the Glasgow Loves Christmas events.

A Glasgow Life spokesman, said: "As well as the return of the much-loved Glasgow on Ice, the Magical Entertainment Marquee will be programmed every night of Glasgow Loves Christmas and is free for all the family to enjoy.

"Highlights include festive films, Christmas choirs and big band concerts."
