ONGOING work to repair water mains will halt over the festive period.
The £3.5million upgrade to some of Glasgow's busiest streets will stop from tomorrow until Monday, January 7.
As previously reported in the Evening Times, the work to replace five miles of crumbling water mains has led to lane closures and changes to bus stops, affecting almost every road from Renfrew Street in the north to Waterloo Street in the south and from West Nile Street in the east to Wellington Street in the west.
The project, started in July and due for completion in November 2013, will now be finished by next summer.
Scottish Water, which is carrying out the work, said it had made the decision to halt work after a meeting with Glasgow City Council's road department.
Project manager Patricia Melly said: "We are working hard to complete this project as quickly and efficiently as possible.
"Some disruption and inconvenience is inevitable, but Scottish Water is well aware of how important the busy festive season is to the city centre and we know stopping work until after the New Year will help businesses and everyone using the area."
Glasgow Chamber of Commerce Chief executive Stuart Patrick backed the decision.
