RANGERS chief executive Charles Green was urged today not to rush into any sponsorship deal that would see naming rights to Ibrox Stadium sold off.

As reported in the Evening Times yesterday, the club have refused to rule out selling off the name of their Govan home, with businessman Mike Ashley thought to be interested in branding it with his SportsDirect retail chain's logo.

While the move would potentially bring in millions of pounds to the club, Rangers Supporters Trust chief Mark Dingwall believes the time is not right.

He told the Evening Times: "The fans will always call it Ibrox, no matter what the club do commercially.

"In terms of maximising the naming rights, it is usually done over a 10-year period so if Rangers were going to do something I think they should wait until we are back in the top tier of Scottish football and qualifying for Europe because it is at that point that they would maximise the value."

Any move to rename Ibrox is likely to split the Light Blue legions, with fans being forced to weigh up the financial benefits against the prospect of potentially losing the name of their historic home ground.

Green has previously been receptive to the idea of selling off the naming rights.

Rangers Supporters Association general secretary John MacMillan said: "I believe he would try to get the feel of the fans on this issue. I would certainly hope he would."

Fans had their say on the Evening Times website. Johnny Mack, said: "This would be the final straw. There will be opposition to this."

Barry McCormack, from Motherwell, said: "Most of the supporters will continue to call the ground Ibrox and life will go on."
