CAMPAIGNERS are bringing their own slice of greenery to Glasgow's George Square to stage a protest against the development of a city green space.

The protesters will bring handmade trees and flowers to the front of the City Chambers on Thursday to show their opposition to a proposed housing development on North Kelvin Meadows in Glasgow's West End.

Developers New City Vision (NCV) plan to build 90 townhouses, flats and mews houses on the meadows, former playing fields between Clouston, Sanda and Kelbourne streets.

The campaign against the build has already been backed by some big names, including writer Alasdair Gray, River City and Taggart actor Tam Dean Burn and the Children's Laureate and Gruffalo author Julia Donaldson.

Comedian Frankie Boyle has more recently tweeted his support and asked his followers to lodge objections to the development plans.

The protest will be held by the Children's Wood Team, who want to highlight the role of the area as an outdoor learning for children and families.

Located in the meadows between Clouston Street and Kelbourne Street, the woods can be accessed any time by parents and children and regularly hosts musical, reading and nature events for kids.

Emily Cutts, chairperson of the Children's Wood Team said: "We feel that the parents' voice isn't being heard.

"We think the space is really important for child wellbeing.

"Some people say the land is derelict and not used, which is just so far from the fact."

The deadline for objection letters which can be sent to Glasgow City Council's planning committee is tomorrow.
