LORD Provost Sadie Docherty began a tour of every primary school in Glasgow to promote the city's hosting of the Commonweath Games - with the help of 2014 mascot Clyde.

Over the coming months she will meet more than 38,000 pupils in 138 primary and 27 Additional Support For Learning schools.

The Games start in 539 days and Clyde will help reinforce the message that the Games will be a fun sporting event for young people to enjoy.

Mrs Docherty's first stop was at Miller Primary, Castlemilk, where she chatted to excited youngsters.

She said: "I chose schools as my legacy when I was appointed and this is a wonderful way to connect with children and get them excited and involved in the Games.

"It is a huge event for the city and the country and it will be something the children, like the rest of Glasgow, will remember for the rest of their lives. Indeed, our next sporting champions may very well be among my audience.

"The reception from pupils has been very favourable. They are a tough audience and ask very direct questions, but you also get a giggle."

One of Mrs Docherty's key messages to pupils is to explain how their parents and other family members can be part of the Games by signing up as volunteers.

She will also encourage them to come into the city during the event to experience the unique atmosphere.
