THE stars of the folk music scene were in Glasgow for the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2013.

Last night's glitzy awards ceremony, held at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, was attended by a host of folk legends – including Dougie MacLean, who was given a Lifetime Achievement Award for Contribution to Songwriting.

The Scottish star – writer of the classic Caledonia – said he was delighted that folk music has become more popular in recent years.

The multi-instrumentalist reckons not much has changed to the music that has been his stock in trade for nearly 40 years – but the internet has brought it to many more people.

He said: "There's another generation listening.

"It's quite nice to see folk music getting more attention."

Mark Radcliffe and Julie Fowlis hosted the show, broadcast live on BBC Radio 2, on the BBC's Red Button and on the Radio 2 website.

The awards are an annual celebration of the UK's vibrant folk scene and recognise achievements over the past 12 months, as well as giving awards to honour outstanding lifetime contributions.

Billy Bragg was awarded the Roots Award in recognition of an outstanding contribution to folk music from a grass roots level upwards.

Shetland fiddler Aly Bain and English folk/rock singer, songwriter and guitarist Roy Harper were also given Lifetime Achievement Awards.

The awards will be available to watch in full for the next seven days, alongside clips of the night's performances, via bbc.co.uk/radio2

A rousing rendition of Caledonia, sung by the award winners, closed last night's ceremony.
