AN outdoor classroom trashed by vandals was restored after a Glasgow community rallied to the children's aid.

The new learning hub in the grounds of Darnley Primary in Glasgow's South Side was smashed when it was targeted by vandals.

It was completed just days before – as part of a £5000 outdoor project – and children from the school hadn't even had the chance to use it.

Last week we told how staff faced the prospect of having to raise even more cash to repair the outdoor classroom.

But principle teacher Lindsey McBride said the response to the story was, "overwhelming," and the gazebo was rebuilt on Saturday, thanks to the efforts of two parents.

Dads Barry McKelvie and Raymond Caddell, who both have children at the school, put right the damage with help from their employers, City Building.

The Glasgow-based construc- tion firm offered to supply all the materials.

Miss McBride said: "The response to the story was just amazing.

"We had comments from parents and calls from people who read it asking what they could do to help.

"The community has really pulled together - it is very heartwarming."

Last Tuesday, staff from Silverburn shopping mall travelled to the school with 300 Easter eggs for the children in a bid to cheer them up.

Teachers now hope to use the new gazebo to host outdoor learning projects with the pupils, including children from the school's visually impaired unit.

Miss McBride added: "I am still worried about the gazebo being vandalised again but we cannot let this put us off trying to make things better for our children."

Councillor Paul Carey, chairman of City Building LLP, said they were keen to help after hearing about the "mindless act of vandalism".

He added: "As a company, we're committed to providing support and assistance to communities and schools across the city and we were delighted to be able to provide the required materials and a skilled team on site to ensure the children can enjoy outdoor educational activities in a safe and secure environment."

Police are investigating the vandalism incident which occurred on Sunday, February 3.

Anyone who can provide information to help trace the culprits should call police on 0141 535 5600.
