SCIENTISTS in Glasgow have developed a tool to make packaged food safer for consumers.
Dr Declan Diver and Dr Hugh Potts created a plasma head that can turn the oxygen inside sealed packaging into ozone, an effective germicide.
The product's effectiveness as a germ-killer also extends food's shelf-life by at least one day.
Is it being brought to the market by Glasgow University spinout company Anacail, or 'shield' in Gaelic.
Anacail Chief Executive Officer Dr Ian Muirhead said: "We're very excited about the applications of our product.
"It's safe and easy to use, doesn't require any change in current packaging of food products to be effective, and it doesn't require any chemical additives."
