THREE Glasgow railway stations to be used by thousands of spectators attending next year's Commonwealth Games are to share a £2million makeover.

Improvements will include new seats –although there is no guarantee that every sports fan will manage to find an empty train seat when travelling to and from events.

The cash injection ahead of the Games was announced today by Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

She said that £1m had already been set aside for renovations to 20 stations in the Strathclyde Police Force area.

However, another £1m was being spent on improvements at Queen Street low level, as well as Charing Cross and High Street railway stations in Glasgow.

A ScotRail spokeswoman said a programme of works had yet to be finalised but it would include new public seats and some features being repainted.

ScotRail's managing director Steve Mongomery said the sports extravaganza will pose "major logistical problems" but that every attempt would be made to make sure extra train services would meet demand.

Mr Montgomery said: "We have a host of improvements planned including more seats and additional train services as well as upgrades and enhancements at some of our stations."

Glasgow 2014 chief executive David Grev-emberg welcomed the extra £1m.

He said: "This invest-ment recognises the vital role public transport plays in ensuring delivery of a successful Games."

The additional money was announced today on the concourse at Queen Street Station by Nicola Sturgeon.

She said: "Almost 20 million commuters already use these three key Glasgow stations every year.

"This investment will deliver a £2m transformation of these and other stations, boosting capacity and improving accessibility."
