A WHEELCHAIR-BOUND soldier and his girlfriend were rescued after their car became stuck in snow.
The pair, both in their 20s, were stranded in a blizzard on a rural road in Abington, South Lanarkshire. The snow engulfed their car and they couldn't turn back.
They called Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and six firefighters began shovelling the snow from around the vehicle. A farmer also helped dig a trench for the car to continue.
A Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "These were extreme weather conditions and the road was impassable. When we arrived it was a blizzard and the couple were more than a mile from the nearest exit.
"The disabled man uses a wheelchair as a result of having been shot while serving in Afghanistan, so there was absolutely no chance of them being able to proceed without their car."
Met Office forecaster Peter Sloss said temperatures today would be around 7C.
