DETECTIVES are probing the rape of 14-year-old girl - more than a year ago.

The girl, now 15,  has only just come forward to police to report the incident which happened in Glasgow's Drumchapel area in December 2011.

Officers said the suspect had a distinctive tattoo on his right thigh of a ship's steering wheel.

The victim was subjected to a horrifying ordeal and has been left traumatised by the incident.

Despite the passage of time, a team of detectives are now carrying out extensive inquiries.

The incident happened between 8 and 9.30pm on Thursday, December 15 2011 close to the Donald Dewar Sports Centre.

The girl managed to make her way home. The man is described as white, aged between 40 to 50-years-old, of stocky build, with short dark brown hair. He was wearing a grey jogging suit and a red 'Puffa' jacket. He had an 'Armani' stud earring in his left ear.

Detectives are continuing extensive inquiries into the incident and are appealing to people to think back and consider if they recognise the description or if they can remember if they were in the area at that time to get in touch.

Detective Inspector Dougie McKinlay, of Glasgow City Centre and West CID, said: "This young girl was subjected to a horrifying ordeal, and has been left so traumatised and devastated by it that she only found the courage to come forward to police last month. We are ensuring that the young girl is being given the support she requires at this difficult time. I appreciate some time has passed since the crime occurred but I am asking people to think back, check their diaries, would you have been in that area then.

“We need to identify and trace this man as soon as possible."
