CITY motorists faced rush-hour travel chaos today after a water main burst flooded a vital commuter road.

Flood water quickly swamped part of Renfrew Road, in the Govan area of Glasgow, when the 24-inch trunk main burst early this morning.

The eastbound carriageway, at its junction with Sheildhall Road, was submerged, blocking traffic.

The lane was cordoned off while engineers from Scottish Water were on site to resolve the problem.

Drivers were today warned to avoid the area, near the Diageo bottling plant, as diversions were put in place around the incident.

A team of engineers were on the scene by 7am today, working to re-distribute the water supply.

Water supplies to the local area were not affected.

It is not known how long it will take for repairs to be completed and the road reopened.

Scottish Water apologised for any inconvenience the burst may have caused.

A spokesman said: "Scottish Water is working to repair a burst water main in Renfrew Road, in Glasgow.

"A section of the road has been closed following the burst of a 24-inch trunk main near the road's junction with Shieldhall Road.

"Engineers are on site working to re-route the water, so customers' water supplies will not been affected.

"Local diversions are in place through Braehead. It is not yet clear how long these will be in operation.

"We apologise to any commuters who faced disruption because of this."

As the water began to clear, some damage to the road was visible, with debris strewn on the carriageway.

Rubble and piles of displaced gravel were also visible next to the carriageway.

Diversions are expected to remain in place until at least tonight.

Scottish Water said investigations were still going on into what caused the burst.
