HALOS, horns and red and white carnations became odds-on favourites at one of the highlights of Scotland's horse-racing calendar.

Thousands of well-dressed punters raised the style stakes last night at the annual Saints & Sinners Racenight.

Celebrity guests including newsreader Jackie Bird, ex-politician Tommy Sheridan and retired footballers Alan Rough, Frank McAvennie and Tom Boyd rubbed shoulders with patrons of Hamilton Park Racecourse.

The glamour annual meeting raises funds for The Saints & Sinners Club of Scotland, which distributes more than £120,000 to 140 small Scottish charities every year.

Patrons made donations through proceeds from sales of carnations in the event's signature red and white colours, a silent auction and a raffle.

Among the 49 horses to feature on the seven-strong racecard, 14 were declared as having trained in Scotland.

The featured race on the night, worth £10,000, was the EBF Captain JC Stewart Fillies Handicap Stakes.

The event also featured live music from Jim McMail, the Ritz Jazz Trio, dancing from the On Point Dance Troupe, plus jugglers, stiltwalkers and fire performers.

The winners of the Best Dressed Couple competition, Jacki Daley and Walter Buchanan from Hamilton, won a stay at the Blythswood Hotel and Spa and weekend use of a BMW Z4.

Philip Martin, racing convenor for Saints & Sinners, said: "We'd like to thank everyone for their attendance, which directly benefits our charity."
