Remember that peculiar 1970s craze? A few pints in the pub and your pals dared you to "streak" on the way home.

Very often these drunken antics didn't end well. A breach of the peace appearance in front of a local Justice of the Peace was not uncommon.

But there is one public display of public nudity in - of all places, Gorbals - that has turned heads for well over a decade.

And let's be honest guys, this chap is huge - in more ways than one.

Quite why the owner of Cosmo Ceramics in the Dixon Blazes Industrial Estate in Oatlands decided the building would be enhanced by an 18ft statue of David is anyone's guess.

It stands - in all its naked glory - atop the building's entrance and has caused much hilarity among shoppers buying tiles from the shop.

One entry on the Yelp website summed it up: "Whenever my parents dragged my brother and I here when we were little this was just too hilarious to handle.

"We would walk about the whole shop in fits of the giggles as if they didn't realise they had an 18ft naked man statue on their roof."

Owner Rodolfo Benacci commissioned the £80,000 replica of the Michelangelo masterpiece in 2000.

It tips the scales at just over a tonne.

At the time he felt the statue looking over the area from the factory in Lawmoor Street would in some way help the Gorbals regeneration effort.

Local MSP Frank McAveety unveiled the impressive sculpture and echoed Mr Benacci's sentiments.

He said: "This work of art shows that there's regeneration going on. It symbolises that we are trying to change this area of Glasgow for the better."

The giant David might have done the Gorbals no harm in terms of regeneration - but for the most part it has given visitors to Cosmo ceramics a good belly laugh.
