A NEW development is planned for the former BBC Scotland site in the West End.

On Tuesday councillors will be asked to give the go ahead to a multi-million pound plan to build a terrace of 19 townhouses on Hamilton Drive.

There will also be four blocks with 75 flats between the townhouses and the River Kelvin.

They will be made up of studio flats plus one, two, three and four-bedroom homes.

The plan has resulted in 37 letters of objection from residents and from a number of heritage and community groups.

They include the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society, the Mackintosh Heritage Group, Friends of the River Kelvin, Greek Thomson Sixty Steps Preservation Trust and Friends of Glasgow West.

The former BBC site includes three listed buildings, one of which was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

The BBC moved to Queen Margaret Drive in 1936 and operated there until 2007 when it moved to a new site at Pacific Quay.

It is understood the development site has been split in two, with leisure tycoon Stefan King's G1 group acquiring the listed buildings.

The new application, by Edinburgh based West Register (Realisations) Ltd., involves the remainder of the site in the Glasgow West Conservation Area.

Objectors say the new development would impact on the conservation area and in particular on the Mackintosh building.

Richard Brown, the city council's executive director of development and regeneration, says in a report: "The proposals will open up views through the site to the river and provide an element of green space within in the site in keeping with the rest of the conservation area."
