SHOPPERS will this weekend be able to enjoy dance performances celebrating the Commonwealth Games.

Three pieces will be previewed over two days as part of this year's St Mungo's Festival.

St Mungo is Glasgow's patron saint and each year in January a festival celebrates his life and work.

The dances, by Easterhouse based Visual Statement, will eventually form part of a large education project involving over 1000 children from the East End.

They are based on the book, A River of Stories compiled on behalf of the Commonwealth Education Trust.

The dances will be previewed on Friday and Saturday from noon until 4pm in the large performance space outside Debenhams in the St Enoch Centre.

Dannie Dobbie, creative director of Visual Statement, said: "Our aim is to introduce young people in Glasgow to the performing arts through dance but due to the Commonwealth theme of these dances, we also hope they will inspire them in the run-up to our city hosting the 2014 Games."

The festival runs until January 18, concluding with a service at St Mungo's tomb at Glasgow Cathedral.
