GLASGOW'S newest supermarket is to serve up a treat.

Charities are to share £1000 which is being donated to mark the opening of the Tesco Metro at Knightswood Shopping Centre later this week.

Britain's biggest grocer has decided to give a cash boost to Glasgow Old People's Welfare Association and Fortune Works which will each receive £500.

Fortune Works is a social enterprise which offers 120 permanent places to adults with learning disabilities across the city while the Association is to give half of its donation to the Gatehouse Day Centre in Anniesland and the rest to the Donald Dewar Day Care Centre in Yoker.

Representatives from both charities will also officially open the new £3million supermarket at 10am on Thursday after store manager Alison McBride was given the keys to the building by site project manager Steven Gunn as construction workers Ian Ashcroft, William Wallace and Colin Munro looked on.

Alison said: "Now that we have received the keys we can begin to prepare the store and stock the shelves.

"My team and I are all looking forward to opening this new Tesco store and providing great service as well as value for money for our customers."

The new store had previously been a Co-op supermarket and has undergone an extensive upgrade.

Tesco recruited 35 Co-op staff and have hired another 76 workers after a recruitment drive triggered job applications from more than 1100 people.
