ANOTHER jobs stampede has been triggered by a super-market opening in Glasgow.

Just 11 posts were advertised for a new Tesco Express on the city's South Side, but they led to nearly 500 applications from people desperate for work.

For the vast majority it led to heartbreak - even those who found themselves placed on a shortlist and invited to come along for a detailed interview.

Britain's biggest super-market chain has revealed its new store in Govanhill generated interest from 476 job hopefuls - more than 43 for every vacancy.

The posts were advertised on the Tesco website and at the local Jobcentre in Pollokshaws Road. But only around 40 applicants were eventually interviewed by store manager John Cairns and his management team, with rejection letters sent to more than 400 others.

And they opted to fill the mixture of permanent and part-time posts with local people in an attempt to create a "community feel" to the store in Victoria Road, which is due to open early next month.

Mr Cairns said: "I was thrilled by the response we received to our recruitment drive. There were so many great applicants which made the decision very tough when it came to selecting the successful eleven.

"My new team and I are looking forward to offering shoppers a clean, bright and spacious new store with fast and friendly service. We want to make this very much a local store for local people."

The latest Tesco Express to open in the city will operate daily from 6am until 11pm. Features will include a store bakery and a range of world foods as well as other attractions such as a free cash machine and mobile phone top-up facility.

The jobs rush is the second to be triggered by Tesco chiefs in just a matter of weeks. The UK's biggest grocery store revealed earlier this month how a new store opening elsewhere in the city had more than 1100 applicants chasing just 76 jobs.

The £3million renovated store at what was a Co-op supermarket opens in two days' time at Knightswood Shopping Centre. It's also thrown a jobs lifeline to 35 former Co-op workers which brings the total number of jobs created to 111 staff.
