GLASGOW families braved wet and windy weather to hear a performance of Roberts Burns' poetry.

Youngsters gathered at the Children's Wood on North Kelvin Meadow, a green space under threat from developers, to be entertained by River City and Taggart star Tam Dean Burn.

The actor was dressed for the occasion in tartan trews as he recited Burns' classic The Twa Dogs. The event at the former playing fields near Kelbourne Street in the West End, was followed by a Burns supper and ceilidh.

Tam, who has recently become a patron of the Children's Wood, said the Burns event highlighted the importance of the threatened green space.

He said: "The North Kelvin Meadow is a magical oasis and the Children's Wood offers a unique space loved by the local community and all who venture there.

"I'm delighted to have this opportunity to encourage kids to savour Burns' love of life, the Scots language and nature in the magical Children's Wood."

It came as the green campaigners continued their fight to keep the meadow in the community.

A planning application by New City Vision to build 90 flats has been lodged but it is not known when it will be progressed.

As the Evening Times has previously reported, the meadow campaigners are calling on Glasgow City Council to reject the application.
