A NEW block of student flats will open in the West End in time for the new academic year.

The development in Kelvinhaugh Street, which is understood to cost £18million, has been named Tramworks.

It involves the redevelopment of a former plumbers' merchant, which has been lying vacant for years.

The development will provide accommodation for 230 students in individual studios or shared flats which will have a small double bed, work space and an en-suite shower room.

The flats will have an on-site gym for the sole use of the students and the cost is included in the rent.

An executive sky lounge will provide complimentary tea and coffee, quiet zone and separate laundry for students choosing club class studios.

Denise Stewart, head of sales and marketing for Fresh Student Living, said: "Tramworks offers Glasgow students a new living experience in a popular location.

"With all inclusive rent, on site accommodation staff and high spec facilities including a gym, it is not only a bright and modern place to live but safe, secure and great value too."

Rents will start from £125 a week including all bills and free contents insurance.

Fresh Student Living manages 21 student accommodation developments across the UK including a development at Collegelands in Glasgow.

The company was awarded an International Quality Mark last year in recognition of its exceptional service to international students.

Glasgow University already has accommodation for students in Kelvinhaugh Street.

The accommodation has 347 single bedrooms in self contained cluster flats for three and five people.
